In March 2014, Michael Hall speaking for Canonical Ltd, indicated that in Unity 8 users will have to opt-in for each search, which will be conducted by opening a special scope and then choosing where to search, addressing previous criticism of its functionality.cite-ref-sneddon30mar14-32-0[32] As of April 2016, with the release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, the setting is off by default.cite-ref-33[33]

Unity 2D

Initially Canonical maintained two discrete versions of Unity, which were visually almost indistinguishable but technically different.

Unity is written as a plugin for Compizcite-ref-compizplugin-34-0[34] and uses an uncommon OpenGL toolkit called Nux.cite-ref-ars-technica-2013-10-17-14-1[14] Being a plugin for Compiz gives Unity GPU-accelerated performance on compatible systems. It is written in the programming languages C++ and Vala.
